My current position as a construction project manager requires both creative and technical skills. I work diligently to create an effective timeline, locate the proper resources and mitigate project risks. When working as a manager a project will present challenges. I act quickly to rework and edit the design layout. The design must include visually appealing solutions to unforeseen problems. When this situation does arise, I seek a well-planned solution. Unfortunately, this can create an unexpected timeline extension. When a timeline adjusts due to modifications, budget or permitting effective client communication is imperative. The ability to communicate and collaborate has led to the most rewarding and successful outcomes.
The skills I have learned through online classes and hands on training include floor tile work, backsplash tile work, professional cabinetry painting, popcorn ceiling removal with asbestos testing, luxury vinyl floor installation, wall and trim painting, hardwood floor refinishing and vinyl siding application. I estimate the budget and costs of supplies needed to complete a job. I make certain subcontractors who will be working with us have an up-to-date license.
One of my biggest obstacles that I have encountered during this time, is releasing control over how a project is completed. Not only am I the manager, but I am also hands on in the majority of projects I undertake. I struggled with relinquishing control. At the time, I felt as though it would not be completed properly if I allowed someone to assist me. I like to maintain a high level of quality control while on the job. I supervise the workmanship and materials that are used while holding everyone accountable for any errors.
I learned about a profession that I watched family members partake in, yet I was not allowed. Being a girl, I was not allowed. Now that I am much older, without limitations set upon me by ridiculous male-female roles, I show my creativity. This has been a challenging and rewarding experience especially when I see my plans come to life right before my very own eyes.
